2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Glance Scroll Devices¶
Glance Scroll units only work on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with WPA2 security and a password.
If your Wi-Fi is only 5 GHz, or is locked to WPA3-only, or has no password at all, your Glance Scroll will not connect.
Why only 2.4 GHz + WPA2?¶
- Hardware limitation: Glance Scroll devices are built to connect only to the 2.4 GHz band.
- Range: 2.4 GHz travels farther and through walls better than 5 GHz, which is useful for small connected devices.
- Cost: Adding 5 GHz support would make the product more expensive.
- WPA2 security: Glance Scroll requires your Wi-Fi to use WPA2 (the standard “Wi-Fi password” most home networks use).
- Password requirement: Open networks (no password) are not supported. Many ISPs (Starlink, Xfinity, Spectrum, etc.) block devices on unsecured Wi-Fi.
What happens if the network isn’t right?¶
- 5 GHz only: Glance Scroll won’t even see the Wi-Fi name.
- Dual-band (2.4 + 5 together): Usually works, but if you have issues, split them into two names.
- WPA3-only: Glance Scroll cannot log in. Change your router to allow WPA2 or WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode.
- No password (open network): Glance Scroll will not connect. A WPA2 password must be set.
How to make sure your Wi-Fi will work¶
1. Check if your router is dual-band¶
Most newer routers broadcast both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. If you only see one option, check your router settings or ISP app to confirm.
2. Check your Wi-Fi security¶
In your router settings or your ISP’s app:
- Set your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi to use WPA2 (sometimes shown as WPA2-PSK or WPA2 AES).
- Do not use WPA3-only or Enterprise mode.
- Always set a password — Glance Scroll will not connect to open Wi-Fi.
3. Split the Wi-Fi names (optional but reliable)¶
Give the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands different names, such as:
HomeWiFi_2GHomeWiFi_5G
This way, you can be 100% sure you’re connecting Glance Scroll to the 2.4 GHz one.
Example: Splitting Wi-Fi on Xfinity¶
- Open the Xfinity App (iOS or Android).
- Go to Connect → WiFi → View WiFi Equipment.
- Select your router.
- Tap Advanced Settings → 2.4 and 5 GHz.
- Turn on “Use different names and passwords.”
- Rename the 2.4 GHz network (for example,
MyWiFi_2G). - Set the Security Mode to WPA2 (or WPA2/WPA3).
- Make sure a password is set.
- Save changes and reconnect your Glance Scroll to the 2.4 GHz network.
Troubleshooting¶
- Only 5 GHz available? → You’ll need a dual-band router or a router that supports 2.4 GHz.
- Router set to WPA3-only? → Switch to WPA2 or WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode.
- No password on the Wi-Fi? → Add a WPA2 password; Glance Scroll won’t connect to unsecured networks.
- Still not connecting? Double-check:
- Password is typed correctly.
- Router channel width is set to 20 MHz (sometimes helps).
- Glance Scroll is close enough to the router.
- Avoid interference (microwaves, cordless phones, etc.).
Bottom line¶
- Glance Scroll must have a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network with WPA2 and a password.
- Dual-band routers usually work fine, but splitting the names makes it easier.
- Open (no password) networks, WPA3-only networks, and 5 GHz-only routers will not work.
